How to Handle Handicap Changes Mid-Season in a Golf League
Handicaps move as your league plays more rounds. Here's how to keep net-score standings fair without recalculating everyone by hand every week.

If your league scores net (adjusting for handicap), you'll eventually run into this problem: a few weeks in, some players' handicaps have already moved, usually down, since they're playing more golf than usual. That's fine for accuracy, but it raises a fairness question nobody wants to sort out mid-season. Here's how most casual leagues handle it.
1Lock handicaps for a defined stretch
Set each player's handicap at the start of the season (or a month, if your league runs shorter blocks), and use that fixed number for every round in that stretch, regardless of how anyone's game changes in the meantime. Update it once at the start of the next stretch.
2Update handicaps continuously
Recalculate everyone's handicap after every round or two, so standings always reflect current form. This is technically the most accurate approach to what a handicap is supposed to represent.
For most casual leagues, locking handicaps for a defined stretch is the easier sell, and it's what most groups land on once they've tried the alternative. Whichever approach you pick, the real requirement is the same: whoever's tracking standings needs an accurate, current handicap for every player, which is the part that's genuinely hard to do by hand across a full season.
